Imaginary Realism - Bissell, Bruvel, Merriam, Rote
An examination of Imaginary Realism through the eyes of internationally celebrated artists: Robert Bissell, Gil Bruvel, Daniel Merriam and Adam Rote. July 17 - August 5, 2010 Opening Exhibition Saturday, July 17, 2010 5:30 to 8:30 PM with Robert Bissell and Daniel Merriam in attendance. "Regardless of personal beliefs or definitions of religion, Magic Realism seems to be a deeply spiritual art form in that it asks essential questions about existence, and, as I have said, thinks about what is "real" right before our very eyes...into this landscape comes Campbell's idea that an "object becomes aesthetically significant when it becomes metaphysically significant" - that is, when the landscape interacts with our deepest ideas of truth and being to give us an experience of "eternity right here and now." which according to Campbell, "is the function of life." We, of course, find these moments of Truth in other arenas, but it seems to me it is the special providence of Magic Realism to remind the everyday seeker that the timeless and the eternal are within reach, and to inspire us to "awe," which, in the end, is what Joseph Campbell says, "moves us forward." - Gil Bruvel
